1.The failure of the plan for the Integration of Malta to Britain.

2. The British Government's decision to close down the naval dockyard in Malta without providing alternative employment for the redundant employees.

4. The arrogance of British Colonial Secretary Lennox-Boyd, who bluntly refused to discuss the Labour Government's demand for Independence.

1. The Labour Government resigned.
2. The British Government suspended the 1947 Constitution and instituted direct rule - Malta's Dictator: Commando Robert Laycock and Police Commissioner Vivien De Gray.
3. All projects launched by the Labour Government between 1955 and 1958 came to an abrupt end. Luckily for the Maltese 33 new schools, various housing estates including a new town, and the first Industrial Estate had been started and completed by 1958.
4. The conservative and reactionary forces in Malta - viewed with good eyes by the British Conservative Government - gained ground to the detriment of the Maltese themselves.
5. Malta was eventually given Independence on British terms. The terms included in 1964, the grant of the same five million pounds a year which the Mintoff government had rejected in 1958. The Naval Dockyard was sold by the British to a private British company, Bailey (Malta) Ltd. Hundreds of workers lost their jobs. Emigration to Australia reached unprecedented proportions as this became the only alternative to starvation. Between 1962 and 1970, more than 50,000 Maltese were forced to leave home, family and country and find work in Australia.
